Pro Search: Deeper, More Thoughtful Answers
- Describe what Pro Search does differently from Quick Search
- Know when to reach for Pro Search vs. Quick Search
- Enable Pro Search before or after a query
Quick Search vs. Pro Search
Perplexity offers two primary search modes. Quick Search is what you get by default: fast, direct, a single pass at the web. It is ideal for factual lookups, current events, and straightforward questions where speed matters more than depth.
Pro Search is different. It runs a mini research process before generating your answer:
- Clarification — If your question is ambiguous, Pro Search may ask one or two focused follow-up questions before searching. This ensures the search is about what you actually mean.
- Multi-angle search — Instead of running one search, Pro Search generates several query variations and searches from multiple angles, pulling in a wider range of sources.
- Source evaluation — It prioritises authoritative primary sources over aggregator sites, ensuring the synthesis draws from stronger evidence.
- Deep synthesis — The final answer is more comprehensive, more organised, and cites more sources than a Quick Search response would.
The trade-off is time. Pro Search takes longer — typically 10 to 30 seconds versus the near-instant Quick Search. For a question that matters, that extra time is almost always worth it.
How to Use It
You can toggle Pro Search on before typing your query using the switch at the bottom of the search bar. You can also turn it on after a Quick Search response appears — clicking "Pro Search" on an existing answer reruns the same query in Pro mode.
Free users get five Pro Searches per day. Pro subscribers get unlimited Pro Searches.
When Pro Search Pays Off
Pro Search earns its extra time when:
- The question has multiple valid interpretations and you want the right one addressed
- You need a comprehensive picture, not a single fact (comparing tools, understanding a topic, evaluating options)
- You want the answer to cite primary sources rather than summaries
- You are preparing to make a decision and accuracy matters
Quick Search is fine for: looking up a definition, finding a current price, checking a recent news headline, or any question with a clear, single answer.
Reading a Pro Search Response
A Pro Search answer typically has more structure than a Quick Search answer — headers, bullet points, numbered comparisons. It may also surface sources you would not have found on your own, including academic papers, official documentation, or primary reports rather than blog summaries of those sources.
Pay attention to the source count in the source panel. Quick Search typically cites 3 to 6 sources. Pro Search commonly cites 10 to 20. More sources does not always mean better, but it usually means a more complete picture.
- Pro Search runs clarification, multi-angle searching, source evaluation, and deeper synthesis — it takes longer but produces more thorough answers
- Use Pro Search for decisions, comparisons, and anything where accuracy matters; use Quick Search for fast factual lookups
