What Extended Thinking Is

Extended thinking is a mode where Claude works through a problem step-by-step before giving you its answer. Instead of responding immediately, Claude reasons through the question — considering multiple angles, catching its own errors, and building toward a conclusion before sharing it.

When extended thinking is active, you can see Claude's reasoning in a collapsible section above the final answer. This is not Claude talking to itself for show — it is Claude actually changing its answer based on what it discovers while reasoning. The final response is often measurably better than what Claude would produce without the reasoning step.

Extended thinking is available on Max and Enterprise Claude.ai plans.

Adaptive Reasoning in Claude 4.6+

With the Claude 4.6 generation (released February 2026), Anthropic introduced Adaptive Reasoning. Rather than requiring you to explicitly turn on extended thinking for each message, Claude now evaluates the complexity of your question internally and decides how much reasoning to apply.

Simple questions get fast answers. Complex questions trigger deeper internal reasoning before Claude responds. You don't have to decide when to reason — Claude does.

For Max plan users, you can still explicitly request extended thinking for any message by selecting the Extended Thinking toggle. This forces deeper reasoning even on questions Claude would otherwise treat as simple — useful when you want Claude to explore something more thoroughly than it would by default.

When Extended Thinking Genuinely Helps

Extended thinking produces meaningfully better results for:

  • Complex analysis — Evaluating trade-offs, weighing multiple options, or synthesizing conflicting information
  • Math and logic problems — Especially multi-step problems where errors compound
  • Strategic planning — When you need Claude to think through second and third-order effects, not just the obvious answer
  • Debugging complex code — When the bug is subtle and requires tracing through multiple system interactions
  • Research synthesis — When you give Claude a large amount of material and ask it to draw non-obvious conclusions

When Extended Thinking Is Overkill

Extended thinking is slower and uses more of your monthly compute budget. For these tasks, it adds cost without adding quality:

  • Creative writing — Writing a poem or story does not benefit from extended reasoning; it benefits from good prompting
  • Simple questions — "What is the capital of France?" does not need a reasoning chain
  • Format conversions — Turning a bulleted list into a table is a formatting operation, not a reasoning problem
  • Brainstorming — Rapid generation of ideas benefits more from breadth than from depth

Reading the Thinking

When you can see Claude's reasoning (the collapsible section), it tells you something useful. If Claude's thinking shows it initially going in the wrong direction and then correcting itself, that is a sign the question was genuinely complex. If the thinking is a straight line from question to answer with no backtracking, the reasoning step added little value.

Use the thinking as a quality signal: if Claude's reasoning looks confused or circular, the final answer may not be reliable. A clean, progressive reasoning chain usually indicates a trustworthy answer.
