The Prompt

Write a personal essay with the following:

Topic or experience: [the subject — a specific event, relationship, period of life, or idea you have wrestled with]
Central argument or insight: [what the essay ultimately says — the truth you arrived at]
Tone: [confessional / analytical / wry / philosophical / urgent / tender]
Length: [500 / 800 / 1200 / 2000 words]
Publications or context: [personal blog / literary magazine / Substack / Medium / submission]
What makes your perspective on this unique: [why you specifically can write this essay]
What you are afraid to say: [the thing that feels too honest — this is usually the best part]

Essay requirements:

OPENING:
- Begin in the middle of a scene or with a striking statement
- No "I have always been fascinated by..." openings
- The first paragraph must make the reader incapable of stopping

BODY:
- Move between specific scenes and larger reflection
- One central image or metaphor that recurs and deepens
- A moment of genuine uncertainty — do not pretend to have had all the answers
- The turn: the moment your understanding shifted

CLOSING:
- Do not summarise what just happened
- End on an image, a question, or a statement that expands rather than closes
- The last line should feel inevitable in retrospect

CRAFT PRINCIPLES:
- Show the thinking, not just the conclusion
- Specific details over generalisations always
- The most vulnerable moments are usually the most universal

After the essay:
- Identify the paragraph that does the most emotional work
- Flag one place where the essay tells instead of shows
- Suggest one cut that would make the essay stronger
