## Memory to Develop

## Chapter Opening (750–1,000 words)

- Opens in scene — drop the reader into the sensory world of the moment immediately
- Weaves the past and present tense perspectives, showing both the person who lived it and the person who now understands it
- Uses at least one extended metaphor or recurring image
- Ends the excerpt at a moment of tension, revelation, or emotional turn that makes the reader want the next page
