**The gap:** for each character, the distance between what they say and what they mean — expressed as a specific contrast, not an abstraction

**Loaded language:** 5–8 words, phrases, or objects in the scene that carry meaning beyond their surface — and what each one signals

**Action substitution:** 3 moments where a character's physical action replaces dialogue and communicates more effectively than words would

**The performance:** the version of themselves each character presents, and why they perform it for this specific person in this specific moment

**Reader positioning:** what the ideal reader understands that no character fully understands

**Revision pass:** rewrite the surface-level dialogue in [SURFACE_SITUATION] so the subtext is present but unstated — show before and after
